India’s satellite communication industry has witnessed strong momentum since the government opened the space sector to private participation. The move aims to extend high-speed internet to regions with limited fiber or mobile network coverage, enabling nationwide digital inclusion.

10 Satellite Gateways Planned Across India

Reports suggest that SpaceX is setting up at least 10 satellite gateways across India — three times more than competitors such as Reliance Jio Space Fiber and OneWeb. Three of these ground stations have already been completed in Mumbai, which will serve as Starlink’s central operations hub. Regulatory inspections of these facilities are expected to begin soon.

Regulatory Green Light and Market Potential

Earlier this year, Indian authorities granted Starlink the approval to provide satellite broadband services and allocated specific frequency bands for operation. This marks a significant milestone for SpaceX, which has long sought entry into India’s expansive internet market — especially as it remains barred from China.
