Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has unveiled a preview of the next generation of AI-powered experiences coming to Microsoft 365 — marking what he calls a new era of “model-forward innovation.” In a series of posts on X, Nadella highlighted five major upgrades that promise to make productivity apps more intelligent, collaborative, and seamlessly integrated with AI.
One of the most exciting additions is Agent Mode in Excel, which transforms the traditional spreadsheet into an interactive coding workspace. Instead of relying on formulas or scripts, users can now prompt Copilot directly within Excel to create advanced models and perform data analysis — effectively turning Excel into what Nadella described as his “new favourite IDE.”
Another key feature is multi-player AI in Microsoft Teams, one of the first collaborative agent experiences. These shared AI assistants can operate inside group chats, channels, or meetings, enabling multiple users to engage with AI simultaneously. This means teams can have a digital helper that acts as a project manager, note-taker, and researcher all at once.
Microsoft is also rolling out a Knowledge Agent, which draws insights from enterprise graph data to deliver relevant, contextual information across the organization’s tools. Meanwhile, a GitHub for Teams feature will allow developers to transition smoothly from chat discussions to code collaboration within Teams.
Perhaps most notably, Microsoft is introducing model choice — giving users in its Researcher tool the ability to toggle between OpenAI and Anthropic models depending on their needs.
Together, these innovations signal Microsoft’s move beyond a single Copilot experience toward a more adaptive, team-oriented AI ecosystem — one designed to evolve alongside the way people and organizations work.
