Nitin Gadkari Inaugurates India’s First Battery Swapping Station for Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicles

Nitin Gadkari inaugurated India's first battery swap cum charging station in Sonepat, set up by Energy In Motion.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has inaugurated India’s first public battery swapping station for heavy-duty electric trucks. The state-of-the-art swap-cum-charging facility, located off NH44 in Ganaur, Sonipat (Haryana), was launched in collaboration with Energy In Motion (EIM) — marking a major milestone in India’s electric mobility journey. The event was also attended by H. D. Kumaraswamy, Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.

The facility is designed to enable ultra-fast battery swaps in just seven minutes, a significant improvement over the typical two-hour charging time. This innovation is expected to revolutionize commercial freight operations by reducing downtime, improving logistics efficiency, and cutting operational costs, while also contributing to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions.

Officials highlighted that the technology would play a crucial role in accelerating the electrification of India’s commercial vehicle segment and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Energy Independence 2047” and “Net Zero 2070”, further strengthening India’s commitment to sustainable and clean transportation.

Key Highlights:
