Google’s $15 Billion AI Push in India Comes Days After Govt’s Move to Zoho; PM Modi, Pichai Hail Partnership

ZOHO Impact? Google Bets Big On India With $15 Bn Investment Days After Government’s Switch To Desi Tech; PM Modi Reacts

In a major boost to India’s technology ambitions, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced a massive $15 billion investment to establish an AI data centre and Google AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The announcement came shortly after the Indian government migrated millions of official email accounts to Zoho’s homegrown platform — signaling a broader shift toward desi tech adoption.

Pichai, who also spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said the investment underscores Google’s long-term commitment to India’s digital future. “Delighted by the launch of the Google AI Hub in the dynamic city of Visakhapatnam. This multi-faceted investment, including gigawatt-scale data centre infrastructure, aligns with our vision to build a Viksit Bharat. It will democratize technology, deliver cutting-edge AI tools to citizens, and boost India’s digital economy,” Pichai posted on X.

PM Modi welcomed Google’s announcement, calling it a transformative step for India’s tech landscape. “This initiative will ensure AI for All, empowering our citizens with advanced tools, strengthening our economy, and securing India’s position as a global technology leader,” the Prime Minister said.

The AI Hub will be developed in collaboration with the Adani Group, marking one of the largest public-private partnerships in India’s tech infrastructure sector. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, said, “Adani is proud to partner with Google to build India’s largest AI data centre campus in Visakhapatnam — engineered specifically for artificial intelligence workloads. This facility will provide the computing power needed for deep learning, neural network training, and AI-driven innovation across healthcare, agriculture, logistics, and finance.”

The move comes amid geopolitical and economic shifts, as the Indian government emphasizes data sovereignty and greater reliance on indigenous digital ecosystems. The recent transition of 12 lakh government employees’ email accounts from the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to Zoho’s secure, India-based servers reflects a growing push to ensure data protection and self-reliance in technology infrastructure.

Google’s massive investment — paired with India’s local tech drive could redefine the country’s role as a global AI powerhouse and anchor its position in the next wave of digital transformation.
