Pioneering Lithium-Ion Battery and UPS Deployment at DataVita’s New Scottish Data Center

Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1 | Optimized for Maximum Efficiency

Background

DataVita’s recent investment in cutting-edge power infrastructure marks a significant milestone for Scotland’s technology landscape. With the launch of its DV2 facility in Glasgow — the nation’s first metro data center — the company sought a power solution that could deliver reliability, efficiency, and sustainability for its growing multi-cloud services portfolio.

To achieve this, DataVita partnered with Vertiv to deploy an advanced lithium-ion battery system, underscoring a shared commitment to innovation and tailored customer solutions. This collaboration not only ensures availability for mission-critical services but also sets a new benchmark for data center resilience in the region.

Challenge: Maximizing Power in a Space-Constrained Facility

The DV2 data center’s central location presented a unique challenge: limited physical space. Traditional battery systems would have consumed more room than the facility could afford. DataVita needed a compact yet powerful solution that would integrate seamlessly without compromising performance or safety.

Lithium-ion technology emerged as the clear answer. Thanks to the streamlined design and superior energy density of Vertiv™ Vision LiFePO4 batteries, DataVita could achieve high-capacity energy storage within a minimal footprint. This smart integration allowed the facility to optimize space usage while ensuring maximum reliability.

Solution: Lithium-Ion Power Meets Advanced UPS Technology

At the heart of the project are two Vertiv™ Liebert® EXL S1 UPS modules, each rated at 500 kVA/500 kW with unity power factor. These high-performance units guarantee uninterrupted power during outages, ensuring the data center remains operational under any circumstance.

Supporting them are two lithium-ion battery cubicles per module, powered by Vertiv™ Vision LiFePO4 batteries. These batteries were selected for their:

  • High safety standards with reduced risk of thermal runaway.

  • Integrated battery management system to prevent deep discharge and ensure long-term durability.

  • Compact form factor, enabling installation in space-limited areas.

Results: Future-Proof, Efficient, and Sustainable

The outcome is a UPS ecosystem designed with tomorrow in mind. Through intelligent ECO modes, the system dynamically adjusts power use, avoiding unnecessary consumption and reducing energy costs. Paralleling capabilities further optimize performance during partial loads, guaranteeing efficiency even under fluctuating demand.

The adoption of lithium-ion LiFePO4 technology delivers several long-term advantages:

  • Extended battery lifespan, lowering total cost of ownership.

  • Rapid recharge capabilities that improve responsiveness.

  • Reduced maintenance needs, translating into operational savings.

  • Optimized space utilization, critical in urban environments.

Together, these benefits position DV2 as a model of sustainable, reliable, and adaptable power protection.

Conclusion

The deployment at DataVita’s DV2 facility highlights Vertiv’s ability to engineer power solutions that balance performance, space, and sustainability. By integrating lithium-ion batteries and high-efficiency UPS systems, the project sets a new standard for data center design in Scotland.

This collaboration demonstrates what’s possible when forward-thinking infrastructure meets customer-focused innovation — a true step forward in building the data centers of the future.
